Traveling buddy

Trixie has proved herself a great traveling companion once again. Last night, we boarded our Jetblue red eye flight. We didn't even give Trix a chamomile pill. She fell asleep or at least kept quiet the whole time. To make it even more difficult, there was a whiny pup on the plane as well....and wouldn't you know, the dog sat in the row right behind us! But Trix did NOT encourage that dog. She ignored it! What a great pup! We're so proud!

We were very happy to see a doggie run (although super small at about 100 sq. feet) at LAX across the street from the Delta terminal (Terminal 5). Aaron did some research for where we could find one, and in doing so, read that all airports are now REQUIRED to have doggie relief areas because of service dogs. It's a lot nicer to travel with pets now, I bet.

And now for a game....I spy with my little eye......a westie!

Teacher's Pet

Trixie has been attending puppy kindergarten. I keep meaning to being my camera to class to show her improvements, but alas.....I'm super forgetful about it. Sometimes, we nearly forget the clicker for her training! Here are some cute photos of her working!
Here she is sitting for the teacher. Teacher Inna likes to give out bits of hot dog. Look how cute she looks....It's hard to see, but on the floor is a piece of turkey. Trixie was instructed to "leave it" and if she didn't POUNCE on it puppy style, she would get a treat! This is Trixie's BFF, Teddy. He's a Maltese Yorkie mix. Trixie is waiting for a treat! What a good little monster! And once again, she's sitting. Pretty hilarious that she and Teddy are sitting for treats while Rudy and Gamma are wrestling!

The Seaside!

We took Trix to the beach today! She loved it. She wasn't running around, but we could tell that she really enjoyed the sand and the smells. We used our 30 feet leash and she was able to feel a little free.30 Feet really isn't that long when you look at this photo. The doberman in the middle of us is Aaron's mom's boyfriend's (wow) dog named Rusty. Rusty is SUPER old and doesn't play, although he did enjoy Trixie at times. We started calling him "creepy Uncle Rusty" if you catch my drift. We think that he started to feel like Trix was his replacement so maybe it's for the best that we're leaving...Trixie dips her paws in the beautiful briny sea! She actually was NOT expecting the wave and later on, when Aaron tried to get her to go in again, she scattered...."no way, dad!"
She refused to pose for pictures. What a diva!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We took Trixie over to my grandparents' house for Turkey day this year. Boy did she love it!? There's a whole enclosed courtyard with a pool there. Also, my grandma loves to feed Trixie things like turkey necks and hearts....what's not to love about that?! She even loved chilling out in grandma's flower bed. I saw grandma giving a little bit of a side eye when this happened and we'll work on it, but it's hard to catch her sometimes.
My cousin Lauren brought over her 1 year old Italian Greyhound, Luna Bon Qui Qui....(that's pronounced Bon Quee Quee if you didn't know) Yes, that's her real name. Sometimes, we just call her Bon Qui Qui. I guess the dog's name used to be Luna but my cousin thought that her name needed something ghetto to follow it up....Trixie and Luna BQQ got along famously. They were chasing each other through the house, through the landscaping, near the turkey, on the pool cover....EVERYWHERE! They were best buds. They even had the same cute pink collars!
Here we all are, trying to take a photo. I guess the girls were more interested in each other than actually posing. Oh well...
They were constantly wrestling! And chasing, and wrestling some more. Trixie has been getting her fair share of play dates! Keep it up, Trix!

Meet Brooke!

A friend of my mom's, Suzanne, loves westies and has one named Brooke. Trixie loves playing with other westies, so we made a playdate. And boy, did they play?
Brooke chased Trixie under a hutch. However, Brooke couldn't fit under there. We were told that Trixie was dusting the floor too. Oh, joy!

Trixie liked that she was able to jump on the furniture at this house. The couch and bed at our house are too high for her....nope, not these couches! And Suzanne loved to meet my mom's "grand puppy" as she likes to call Trixie.
Brooke liked to look down on Trixie. They tired each other out! It was only about half an hour of playtime and she took at least a 2 hour nap afterwards! Looks like we'll be calling up Brooke again! You can see them chase each other here!

Stop in Solvang

Since we drove all the way from LA to Paso Robles where my family lives, we wanted to make pit stops for Trixie. It's a 3 hour drive and she has to stay in her crate while in the car. We stopped in Solvang, a little Danish village right off the 101. Parts of the movie Sideways were filmed here. We always stop to get Danish pastries.Trixie had a great time and everyone on the sidewalks wanted to pet her, was saying how adorable she was....Solvang is good for any cute pup's self esteem.

A sad day

Today, we went shopping for a long leash so Trixie could play in my parents' huge backyard in California. While we waited for an associate to tell us where they were in the store, Aaron found the "christmas costumes" for dogs.
Okay, it's not really a sad day. More of a pathetic day for Trixie. Look how happy she looks! It really looks like she's loving California so far!

Traveling pup!

We've been worrying non stop for about a month and a half about today! We were flying to California, non stop. We purchased Trixie a ticket. (Can you believe that she counts as my carry on and I STILL have to pay for her?!) We took Jetblue and they were absolutely fabulous about her being there. They even had a pet relief area outside the check point so that after the long drive to the airport, she can relieve herself. We were very happy to see this. The airplane part was cake too. In fact, Trixie was probably the quietest passenger on our plane. Our neighbor was a snore-a-holic and the kids behind us had trouble with the pressure in the cabin. We were so proud! So proud in fact, that we took her to...
PINKS! Yes, we took Trixie to Pink's hot dogs. For those of you who don't know, Pinks has been around since 1939. There's always a line outside as you can see in the picture and celebrities show up all the time since it's right in Hollywood! Since Aaron didn't want to share and neither did I, we bought Trix her own hotdog. Don't worry, we didn't just place it on the ground and tell her "ok, dig in!". We gave her little bits while we trained her. The fact that she was so obedient makes me believe that she found that hot dog divine!

Romy and Trixie

Romy is another classmate of Trixie's. We saw him at the dog park and went to play. First week of puppy kindergarten, Trixie was cowering away in the corner while Romy was barking and sniffing up a storm. A little moving furball....pomeranians look like dust bunnies. But Trixie actually played with him! See the cuteness here! YEAH TRIXIE!!!

Meet Montgomery!

The only thing better than a westie is TWO WESTIES!

Today, we went to the dog park for an hour and a half! Trixie was actually playing with almost every dog there! About hour in, another westie showed up. Montgomery is a 10 year old westie that lives in the neighborhood. As soon as he came into the park, they
ran straight for each other, sniffed, and went about their business. They did play together and it looked like Trixie was looking up to him, kind of like the "big brother" program.
They had a blast running around. Montgomery was pretty preoccupied with a tennis ball though. Trixie kept 'play bowing' in hopes that he would drop it and come pounce. Alas, Trixie will have to change up her game plan for next time.I was pretty stoked that they took pictures together. Aren't they adorable??!! Me and his owner were going nuts over our doggies. I think we drove all the non westies out of the park. But that's what happens when you come uninvited to a westie party, or as I like to say "westie festie!"Hopefully, we'll see them soon. There's only one other westie I've seen in the neighborhood and his name is Rambo, so maybe we can get more popular.

Agility trials? Maybe...

We've been thinking it over about putting Trixie into agility trials since she isn't a show dog. She's just a proud pup with a lot of energy, and...well, heck, we think our dog is the "bee's knees!" (What does that even mean, anyway?!)

Enter the tunnel! Our breeder told us that we could buy her a kiddie tunnel from Ikea. It was only $20 and in the children's section. When Trixie first met her tunnel, this is what happened.

Yeah, she wasn't quite anticipating it to shoot open or be big. But she likes it now. See?

Monopoly Dog?

Before Ms. Trixie got her haircut from hell (it's almost to a point where we love it, so really it wasn't that had to begin with), Aaron loved to point out that Trixie's shadow looked like the Monopoly dog. What do you think? Do you think she could buy Park Place?

Doggie registry?

When people announce that they're expecting, you usually receive an invitation to a baby shower and you "shower" the mother to be with loads of gifts. Diapers, toys, onesies, etc.

They don't have doggie registries. Why is that? Not that I would have done one, but getting a puppy is a step towards a child, and while I've never had a child and never been pregnant (thank god!), Trixie has changed our lives in the same way that a baby would.

We have lovely friends and family members that have decided that sending doggie gifts sans a doggie registry would be fun! So here is Trixie's newest toy:
It is a tree stump with 3 holes in it. Inside the stump are 3 squeaky squirrels. The object is to hunt out all the delicious squirrels and annihilate them all! Clean em' out!

Trixie LOVES to play with it. You can watch her first time right here! Thanks to Jeff, Yoko, and Mei for the lovely other toys as well. Trixie has yet to play with them. We don't want her TOO spoiled, now do we?

Haircut!

Today, Trixie smelt like a homeless dog! Straight up homeless dog! All she needed was a sign and a hat with a hole in it and she'd be a dead ringer! The smell made it clear; it was time for a trip to the groomer!

We have seen a lot of westie photos. Crazy photos of fluff-tastic balls of fluffiness and we find them all ridiculous! See this one?RIDICULOUS! We didn't want that long coat on the bottom. The wood chips at the dog park get all matted in there and it's yucky. We also didn't want the crazy bubble head! Unfortunately, when you tell the groomer these things, this is what happens:She looks like a boy in my opinion. Aaron figured it out about an hour ago that she has a scottie dog cut. It'll all grow back, but it's a little upsetting to drop your dog off somewhere and you show up 2 hours later and your dog is now a cat! Yes, she looks like a cat!
At least she still loves me!

Night life!

Trixie went to a bar tonight! Why, you ask? Because we're trying to prep her up for the airport in less than 2 weeks. That, and we want a social life again. The bar, Levee in Williamsburg is doggie friendly! What's really nice about Trixie is that tons of people now approach us and want to talk about their dogs. I guess Trixie makes us less scary!
After the bar, we came home and had some fun time on the bed! Trixie is not actually allowed to sleep on the bed though! What a naughty westie!

She's NOT anorexic!

When we first got Trixie, George the breeder mentioned that this particular line of westies that they bred were a little finicky with their eating. And boy was he right!?

Trixie sometimes doesn't touch her breakfast until a couple hours before dinner. This is really irritating to me. I've even added different things to the food. And yes, we've tried 3 different types of food for her and she definitely LOVES this one.

Well, I can NOW say that I know the secret. Our doggie kindergarten teacher told us to put food in toys, like Kongs.
So we bought a food pyramid! And she LOVES it. Every piece of kibble that falls out becomes a golden morsel of food in its rarest form, something that even our picky westie cannot ignore! Huzzah!

Silent Moments

In our efforts to get ready for Thanksgiving, we decided that it might help Trixie is she has a little herbal help to make the long flight. It did calm her down and she was super chill for a couple of hours. No bad side effects, except for maybe spazzing out the NEXT day! I guess we'll have to try it out again and see it if happens again.

Aaron and I came up with some other names for this pill. I mean, "Silent Moments" sounds really silly, no? So we give you:

"Man's Second Best Friend"
"Nippy Naps"
"Pooped Pups"

Oh, and if you want to see her NOT tired, check out her playing here! We finally let her out on the carpet....eek!

Nylabone, you're my best friend

We bought Trixie a nylabone a couple of days ago because of our puppy kindergarten teacher's suggestion. Trixie has been nibbling away on her crate, the wall molding, and even the kitchen cabinets....."dang it, Trixie! Who is their right mind wants to buy a house with all your teeth marks on it!?"

She loves this nylabone though. I even heard her nibbling away at 2 in the morning. Um, pup why are you even UP at that time?!

My Sleeping Buddy

Trixie loves to lay on my stomach and sleep before coming downstairs for the rest of the day to start. It's a little mommy pup time! I think we were like this for 30 minutes this morning before there was any wiggling!

Crushed by the mattress

I don't like Trix to sit in her crate without something soft to sit on. When I'm doing laundry and take her pad to be cleaned, I will stuff her day bed in there. It has worked until today....

I give you.....crushed puppy!
Maybe some velcro is necessary?

A new toy!

When Trixie spent the afternoon with Moon Shadow the Whippet, she loved his toy! So much in fact, that she carried it around in her mouth and wouldn't let him have it. Yep, she's not the best sharer just yet, but we're working on it.

Trixie LOVES her new squirrel toy! She loved saving mommy from the rabid squirrel!

Twins?!

Trixie has a twin! I think we may be a little obsessed with our dog, no? You be the judge!

Tuesday, November 2, 2010

Vote or play dead!

Trixie voted today....did YOU? She had to choose between Repuplicans or Demuttcrats! (I know, really bad!) I was really pleased that the people in charge didn't make me leave. Granted, Trixie was in her carrying case....still, there's a rule (supposedly) that dogs aren't allowed there. But everyone had a smile on their face knowing that Trixie was there.

So one last time, if you haven't voted, do it! Or Trixie will not let you pet her!

Daddy's Birthday!

Today was Aaron's birthday! It is also his friend Ben's birthday! Ben lives in Philly, a 2 hour drive away. It's nice to spend your birthday with your best friend so for the second year in a row, we drove down to spend our dinner with Ben, his wife Rachel, their newborn baby Lilly, and their crazy Whippet, Moon Shadow!

I got a nice little photograph of the birthday boys on the floor with their doggies! I was really impressed with Trixie. While she still has a little anxiety with dogs (especially Moon Shadow who sometimes plays rough, but LOVES little dogs) she held her own, stole his toys, and spent numerous hours in her new travel case.
They even went for a walk together! And they chased each other around the kitchen island. Ben was saying that Shadow must love Trixie because he was really into her. Aww, puppy love!
